How to read a softener sizing proposal
Daily grain load, usable resin capacity and peak flow are separate design questions.
Start with measured inputs
Use household occupancy, indoor water consumption and measured hardness in grains per gallon. The homepage calculator multiplies those inputs and shows an illustrative seven-day load. Its initial indoor usage value is a scenario, not a local average. Exclude irrigation demand from the softened stream where it is bypassed, and use actual meter or fixture information when available.
Nameplate capacity is not the whole design
Ask for usable grain capacity at the proposed salt dose, reserve setting and expected regeneration interval. A marketed maximum capacity can differ from the efficiently operated working capacity. A household with several simultaneous showers may need a flow check even when the weekly grain load is modest. Ask what pressure loss is expected under peak use and where bypass and service access will be located.
Request an auditable calculation
A proposal should show input hardness, estimated treated gallons, working capacity, salt dose and meter/reserve settings. Ask how iron or other measured conditions affect the design, if relevant. A seven-day scenario is educational and does not establish a mandatory regeneration interval. Confirm the actual model and manufacturer specifications before buying equipment on the strength of a calculator result.
