Keep irrigation separate from softened water
Check the plumbing route before counting outdoor demand as part of a residential softener design.
Why the branch matters
Highlands Ranch Water advises that sodium-rich softened water should not be used for outdoor irrigation. Outdoor demand can also consume softener capacity unnecessarily. Identify which branches serve irrigation, exterior hose bibs, the water heater and indoor fixtures before choosing the treatment location. A visible irrigation controller does not reveal the supply branch inside the plumbing.
What to confirm at the property
Ask the installer to identify the main shutoff, treatment bypass and irrigation takeoff. Document whether an untreated outdoor branch is already available and what work is required to preserve it. Do not operate a valve solely from an internet diagram; labels, backflow equipment and winterization procedures are property-specific. Applicable code and the actual installation plan govern the final routing.
Calculate only the treated stream
A whole-property water bill includes outdoor use, so it can overstate the softener load. Use indoor consumption or a clearly labeled scenario for grain-load estimates. The revised calculator excludes an automatic irrigation uplift. A written proposal should say which fixtures will receive softened water and which remain untreated, then verify those routes during startup.
