Basement and utility-room installation checklist
Equipment selection needs a practical layout that preserves access, drainage and the intended plumbing branches.
Map the connections
Identify the water entry, main shutoff, hot-water supply, outdoor branch and proposed bypass. Ask the installer to explain the treatment location and any untreated fixtures. Confirm space for salt loading, filter removal, valve access and future tank replacement. A photograph alone may not reveal hidden branch routing or establish code compliance.
Confirm drain and power needs
Some equipment requires a drain, air gap, power supply or backwash capacity; others have different requirements. The specific manufacturer instructions and applicable plumbing requirements govern the installation. Ask how leakage would be detected and controlled, what permits are applicable and whether any walls or finished surfaces will be opened. Do not accept a generic drawing as the final installation plan.
Define completion
The written scope should cover equipment model, labor, bypass, drain/electrical work, startup settings, leak checks and the performance verification tied to your goal. Save photos and instructions after commissioning. Ask for exclusions and repair responsibilities where pre-existing plumbing issues are discovered. Ensure a homeowner can find the safe shutoff and service contact after installation.
