Buying a home with existing water equipment
Identify the installed system and its condition before treating it as a valuable working asset.
Inventory before assuming performance
Photograph tank labels, valve models, filter housings, RO membranes and the plumbing route. Ask for installation invoices, warranties, service history and manuals. A tank in the basement can be bypassed, empty of effective media or configured incorrectly. Do not assume a seller’s statement about softened water is a current performance test.
Commission or diagnose the system
Ask a qualified provider to verify safe connections, leaks, bypass position and the measurement appropriate to the equipment’s purpose. Compare untreated and treated hardness for a softener; select target-specific evidence for filtration claims. Identify any missing drain, power or service access issue before continuing normal operation. Follow model instructions for returning idle equipment to service.
Plan the first year
Budget for overdue consumables, repairs, sanitation and any warranty-transfer conditions. Request a written distinction between required work and optional upgrades. Supplier context matters: confirm the utility on the bill rather than assuming the neighborhood determines the water. Keep newly verified settings and test results as the baseline for future maintenance.
